Aphis   Listen
noun
Aphis  n.  (pl. aphides)  (Zool.) A genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and family Aphidae, including numerous species known as plant lice and green flies. Note: Besides the true males and females, there is a race of wingless asexual individuals which have the power of producing living young in rapid succession, and these in turn may produce others of the same kind for several generations, before sexual individuals appear. They suck the sap of plants by means of a tubular proboscis, and owing to the wonderful rapidity of their reproduction become very destructive to vegetation. Many of the Aphidae excrete honeydew from two tubes near the end of the body.

Thereafter a single ant was admitted to their company, the insect, in Mr. Darwin's words, appearing, "by its eager way of running about, to be well aware what a rich flock it had discovered." The ant first stroked one aphis and then another, each insect excreting a drop of the sweet juice "as soon as it felt the antennae;" and "even the quite young aphides behaved in this manner, showing that the action was instinctive, and not the ...

... the utmost value to something alive. Upon almost every fir branch near the end there are little fragments like cotton, so thick in places as to quite hang the boughs with threads; these gossamer-like fragments appear to be left by some insect, perhaps an aphis; and it is curious to note how very very busy the little willow-wrens are in the fir boughs. They are constantly at work there; they sing in the firs in the earliest spring, they stay there all the summer, and now that the edge of autumn ...

... pains with these flowers were unsparing. Neighbours laughed at him (so his wife assured me, with some pride) because he went to the plants down on his hands and knees, smoking each one with tobacco to clear it from green aphis. He also raised fifty or sixty sticks of celery every year, which sold for threepence apiece. Meanwhile he by no means neglected his main business as a cottage-gardener—namely, the growing of food-crops for home use. By renting for five shillings a year an extra plot of ...
